Restless Spirit Brings Long Island Heavy to Chapel of Bones

One thing I love about going to shows is discovering bands that somehow slipped under my radar. Father’s Day at Chapel of Bones gave me another one of those moments when Long Island’s Restless Spirit took the stage supporting GOZU on what is essentially the final stretch of their national tour together.

Before we even get into the music, I’ve got to admit I missed an important opportunity. Being originally from New York myself, I completely forgot to ask the band the most important Long Island question of all. Nassau or Suffolk?

If you’re from Long Island, you understand.

That question aside, the guys in Restless Spirit were incredibly approachable all night. They spent time hanging out at the merch table, talking with fans, answering questions, and just being regular dudes enjoying the final dates of a tour. In an era where some bands disappear the second they leave the stage, that kind of accessibility still means something.

Formed on Long Island, Restless Spirit has built a reputation around a sound that blends traditional heavy metal, doom, hard rock, and stoner influences. The riffs are heavy without feeling slow. The songs have groove without sacrificing power. Most importantly, they understand how to write songs that stick with you long after the set is over.

When they hit the stage at Chapel of Bones, it didn’t take long to understand why they’ve developed such a loyal following. Their set was tight, confident, and delivered with the kind of chemistry that only comes from years of playing together. There was no wasted motion and no unnecessary theatrics. Just solid songwriting backed by experienced musicians who know exactly what they want their music to sound like.

What impressed me most was how naturally they fit on this bill. GOZU, Restless Spirit, Crystal Spiders, and Archaos all brought different flavors of heavy music, but Restless Spirit occupied a sweet spot right in the middle. Heavy enough for the riff worshippers, melodic enough to stay memorable, and powerful enough to command the room.

Like GOZU, they benefited from a strong crowd at Chapel of Bones. Fans were engaged from start to finish, and the energy never really dipped throughout the evening.

As their run with GOZU comes to a close, Restless Spirit leaves behind the impression of a hardworking band that takes both their music and their fans seriously. They showed up, delivered a killer set, spent time with the people who came out to support them, and reminded everyone why Long Island has produced so many great heavy bands over the years.

I still don’t know if they’re Nassau or Suffolk.

Maybe next time.
